12 Point Attic Insulation Checklist

  1. Evaluate the type, depth, quality of installation, and overall condition of your current attic insulation.

  2. Measure all attic surfaces, including the attic ceiling, knee-walls, slopes, and domed ceilings to assess insulation coverage.

  3. Determine the R-value (insulation value) of each surface in the attic, as well as the R-value of your duct system.

  4. Inspect all attic ductwork for any signs of air leaks and proper insulation.

  5. Check the attic access entrances for potential air leaks and insulation quality.

  6. Thoroughly examine and address any attic air leaks, including open chase ways, drop-down soffits, wiring, plumbing, HVAC penetrations, wall top plates, recessed can lights, and bathroom vent fans.

  7. Evaluate the insulation and air leaks of the whole-house attic fan if applicable.

  8. Inspect ventilation devices such as bathroom, dryer, and kitchen vents to ensure proper ventilation.

  9. Verify the attic ventilation by examining soffit, ridge, and gable vents for adequate airflow.

  10. Assess all flues for compliance with safety regulations and manufacturers' specifications.

  11. Check for any debris in the attic that may impede insulation effectiveness, considering insulation and debris removal as needed.

  12. Evaluate the attic's overall condition for any durability issues, including water damage, humidity levels, mold growth, rodent or pest presence, and damage from insects.
